Just Communities: Power in Partnership by Building Community Voice and Capacity

The power of the cohort model lives in the leaders themselves. Over the past two years, HCC supported two different cohorts, which included 10 organizations, from housing advocates to environmental stewards, representing the breadth of grassroots leadership in Atlanta. Each one brought unique priorities, and each walked away with communications tools tailored to their voice and vision.

Over two years, this initiative advances equitable environmental action across Atlanta neighborhoods by implementing the Just Communities Protocol to center community leadership. The work builds collaborative partnerships, strengthens neighborhood networks, and confronts long-standing disinvestment through intentional, justice-driven strategies.

The project presented an opportunity for HCC to support 10 Atlanta-based grassroots organizations in strengthening their communications infrastructure, using customized strategies and storytelling approaches to advance the Just Communities Protocol and promote equitable, justice-centered neighborhood development.

    Key Challenges:
  • Many organizations were operating with limited staff, funding, and time, making it difficult to prioritize strategic communications alongside core programmatic work.
  • Underdeveloped social media strategy.
  • Outdated websites limited clarity, accessibility, and audience engagement, requiring a strategic refresh.
HCC designed and executed a four-part strategy to address common barriers faced by cohort members:

  • Convened cohorts for collaborative learning. .
  • Developed customized communications frameworks (including branding and messaging tools).
  • Built infrastructure (e.g., email and digital strategies).
  • Offered sustainability coaching for long-term impact.
  • Each organization received tailored communications tools based on their goals and capacities.
